Mission San Luis Rey

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is a National Historic Landmark beause of its a perfect example of a Spanish Mission Church complex. Founded in 1798 the Church is located in the northern part of San Diego in the beach town of Oceanside. Of the 21 California Missions, Mission San Luis Rey is the largest making it known as the "King of the Missions".

The Mission offers visitors an opportunity to learn about the history of the Mission and San Diego by exploring the Mission's Museum. In addition to the Mission San Luis Rey Museum, the beautiful gardens surrounding the San Luis Rey Mission Church are naturally peaceful. Of note the first pepper tree planted in California is still alive outside in the Gardens. For some the cemetary is another interesting aspect of the Church as it contains some key figures of San Diego's history. Founded by Father Fermin Lasuen the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is named for Louis the King of France. Inside the Church the original wooden pulpit and the altar are worth seeing as well as the detailed paintings on the wall and the Church bell.
