San Diego Civic Theatre

San Diego Civic Theatre is the top San Diego performing arts venue where grand productions of Broadway and Operas are performed. Home to the San Diego Opera and the California Ballet, the San Diego Civic Theatre puts on performances year round to sold out audiences. Occasionally, headliner bands perform at the Civic Theatre. San Diego Theaters is a non-profit organization where their goal is to offer the public world class theatre experiences. The San Diego Theatres aims to improve the reputation of the Downtown theatre district through their high quality performances.

The musicals performed here are almost always a great experience. You will notice the building itself is a bit aged and could use a renovation, but in its present state it adds to the charm. Though it is nice to dress up to see a performance here, it is not necessary as many people go to the shows wearing jeans. The food and drinks at the snack bar are expensive and the shows usually last around two hours so eating before you get there is usually a good idea. No cameras or video cameras are allowed. There is a coat check and handicapped seating. The theatre itself has excellent sound acoustics and the stage is state of the art with hydraulic lifts and scene moving apparatuses.

As the largest indoor theater in San Diego county with a seating capacity of 2,967 the Theatre has three levels of seating and seat selection is very important. Try to avoid the Mezzanine and balcony section. You will save a few dollars but the significant distance from the stage and the possibility of missing some of the action when the performers are on a raised part of the set make spending the extra money on better seats more then worthwhile. Rental binoculars are available if you do sit on the upper levels.
