Star of India

The Star of India is part of the Maritime Museum in downtown San Diego. What makes the Star of India so special is that it is the world's oldest active ship. Built in 1863 the fully-rigged iron windjammer cargo ship is now a National Historic Landmark. Unlike many other restored ships, the Star of India hull, cabins, and equipment are almost completely original.Star of India at the Maritime Museum

In 1966 the Star of India was designated as a National Historic Landmark and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The ship has experienced some very interesting history including 21 around the world trips, being used as a salmon trading boat in Alaska, and being a cargo ship for lumber, coal and sugar. Additonally, some Star of India ghost stories exist claiming several unfortunate sailors and passengers still haunt the ship's decks and cabins.

Presently, the ship sails at least once a year with a skilled crew of volunteers from the Maritime Museum.
